Top 4 reasons you need to exfoliate!

Not sure why you need to exfoliate?

So many people I have met have said to me ‘I never exfoliate, no point now’ or ‘I’m too old to start looking after my skin’ Let me tell you… yes there is, and no you are not!!! Your skin regenerates itself every 28days (or slightly longer depending on your age), so there is always a point, and you are never too old as there is always new skin on its way! If you need further convincing, here are my top 4 reasons you should be exfoliating –

  • Keep your skin new!

Our skin is a wonderful thing. The top layer, called the Epidermis, consists of four main layers and cells called Keratinocytes form the bulk of them. The journey of a Keratinocyte starts at the very bottom layer of our Epidermis and goes from being all new, plump & shiny to become a flattened disc at the top ready to be sloughed off.  This process takes around 4 weeks and increases in duration as we get older. At the end of the cycle, we need to be exfoliating in order to remove these dead skin cells and make way for luscious, new, smooth skin! We should be exfoliating every 2-3 days for best results. While we want to make sure we are exfoliating enough, we also don’t want to over exfoliate as this can be damaging to our skin.

  • Prepare to wax!

Exfoliating is key to preparing for a wax. It helps to remove dead skin cells that surround hair follicles. It also helps loosen ingrown hairs and improves your waxing results. Keeping hydrated and moisturising with a natural lotion that doesn’t block pores are also key to prepping for a wax. Oh, and please don’t trim your hair! Your hair can never be too long, but it can be too short.

  • Tan, tan, baby!

Whether you fake it or you’re lucky enough to be catching some winter sun, exfoliation is important to preparing for that golden tan! Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, which then reveals the fresh skin underneath. This fresh skin is primed and ready to absorb the spray tan solution, or sun, evenly and deeply. This means that you'll have a more even tan for longer. To maximise your tan, moisturise every day. The more moisture in your skin, the longer your tan will last and the more natural it will appear. Hydrate the skin with a natural moisturiser and drink plenty of water.

  • Have a soak in the tub?

Are you lucky enough to own a hot tub? Or maybe you are holidaying somewhere with one soon? Did you know, before entering a hot tub, it is important to shower beforehand to remove any dirt, grime and any personal products (like deodorant) you may have used through the day. In addition to this, you should also exfoliate 2-3 times per week (guys & gals!!), to remove any dead skin cells. This helps keep your water in tip top condition and prevents any dust gathering in your filters. Meaning less water changes, and more efficient running costs. It’s a win, win! Smooth skin & saving money!
